Here’s a sport you won’t see anywhere else in the world. OK, maybe in Melbourne where it originated. But make no mistake: sports are an undeniable part of Australian identity, and it was only a matter of time before the historically Victorian sport of Australian rules football made its way up to Sydney. There’s a good rivalry better fans of this and fans of rugby league; although it’s mainly played out in wars between TV channels for broadcast rights. All we care is its the game we love: because what you see here in a stadium for 100,000 people is exactly the same game people play in local parks, picnics or pretty much anywhere you think there’s room for it. (For me growing up, that often meant in a forest, basement or even a space as small as a shed.)
